Jefferson County Master Gardeners currently have two active projects at the Louisville Nature Center.
The LNC Rain Garden
The purpose of a rain garden is to reduce storm water runoff which is a huge problem in cities. Rain garden native plants direct water into the ground, slow the flow, and filter the water before it eventually makes its way to streams and the river. The more rain gardens there are the less water flowing over parking lots and into sewers and less standing water in grassy areas. This is why MSD funded this project. Rain gardens also provide a habitat for pollinators. Master gardeners helped plant this rain garden and still provide yearly maintenance.
The LNC Sensory Garden
The Sensory Garden incorporates a variety of native and non-native flowers, herbs, and shrubs that bring attention to how plants can engage our senses. The garden also provides food and shelter for a wide host of insects and birds. The work done by master gardeners includes the installation and maintenance of plants for the garden and development of and assistance with LNC educational programs. These educational programs teach children and adults about plant parts, plant reproduction, pollination, and other topics.
